Road Trip: Cartimar Shopping Center

My dad has what I like to call “phases” when it comes to his hobbies. When he’s into something – for example, orchids, dogs or chickens, he would go all out during his phase buying this and that.

He is now back to his FISH stage, ever since we installed an aquarium in our den for good Feng Shui.

For one who would like to look for pets – either fish, cats, dogs, birds, etc – the best place to go to in Manila would be Cartimar Shopping Center located along Taft Avenue.

Cartimar has been around since as far back as the 1970s as a shopping haven for city folk. I’ve been going here since I was a kid, as this place was had the cheapest and most number of pet stores and bike stores.

Tip and I couldn’t wait to see the stores!

The place was bustling for a Saturday afternoon with lots of cars parked in the streets of the complex, but we managed to immediately find a parking spot near the fish area.

Things have changed since the last time I came here. The sellers who sell fishes are now located at Aqualand Alley near the entrance of the complex. Here they sell a variety of fishes for your aquarium – from salt water fish, fresh water fish, feeds, plants, decorations and even worms!

My favorite place in Cartimar is the pet center. This portion has greatly improved with bigger, cleaner stalls for the pet shops. These stores sell all kinds of pets – from puppies, kittens, gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, birds, etc.

Cute little shih tzu puppy!

Cartimar is also well known for supplying bikes and other sporting goods. While I was getting my hydration belt for the race tomorrow, dad, Ferdie and Tip looked at kiddie bikes with training wheels.

We finally found one for her at the right price (about half of what you pay for in a department store) and the friendly kuyas kindly assembled the bike for us.

It was over-all a fun and nostaligic trip downtown! Can’t wait to do this again 🙂
